Start Late, Finish Strong: Why Now Is the Perfect Time to Begin

There’s a funny thing we humans like to do when it comes to making change: we wait.
We wait for Monday.
We wait for the first of the month.
We wait for the new year.
We wait until we “feel ready.”

But here’s the truth: ready isn’t a feeling—it’s a decision.

Today, ten people started in our brand-new LEGENDS program for adults 65+. Some came early, some showed up late, but every single one of them worked hard for an hour, and every single one of them left with a smile. And you know what? That's what it's about. Almost everyone who joins our community says some version of this:

“I wish I had started sooner.”

And yet—starting later is always better than never starting at all.

Why “Starting Late” Is the Best Start

Maybe you’ve been telling yourself you’ll start working out when your schedule clears up. Or when the kids are older. Or when your energy is better. Or when you finally have a free Monday.

But let’s be real: life doesn’t get less busy. Energy doesn’t magically appear out of nowhere. Mondays don’t hold secret superpowers.

If you continue on your current trajectory—living the same lifestyle, keeping the same habits—will you be happy with where you’re at one year from now? Or ten years from now?

The beautiful thing about starting now, even “late,” is that you can completely change that trajectory. The little changes you make now will compound into big results later.

Three Steps to Get Started (Anytime, at Any Age)

  1. Pick three things you have control over.
Maybe it’s moving more, getting to bed earlier, or eating more veggies. Don’t overcomplicate it—just pick three.
  2. Break it down.
Each month, focus on one habit. Each week, break that habit into smaller, realistic steps.
  3. Take daily action.
Every day, work on just one step. Progress, not perfection, is what changes lives.

An Example: Moving More in October

Let’s say you’re pretty sedentary during the day and you want to get moving again. Here’s how you could break that goal into bite-sized weekly steps:

  • Week 1: Park farther away from the door when you go places.
  • Week 2: Take a walk during your lunch break.
  • Week 3: Add an after-dinner walk.
  • Week 4: Try a beginner-friendly exercise video on YouTube, or better yet, drop into a class at Deep Roots Fitness (Yoga or Butts & Guts are great options).

Simple. Doable. Powerful.

You Don’t Need a Monday or a New Year

You don’t need a fresh calendar to start. You just need to decide. We have three months left in 2024. That’s three months of opportunities. Three months to build habits that will carry you into the new year already strong, confident, and feeling good in your own skin.

The best time to start may have been years ago. But the second-best time? Today.

So—what are you waiting for?
