Life gets busy. Between work, school, homework, and the gravitational pull of screens, it can feel nearly impossible to carve out time to move together as a family. But here's the truth: movement doesn't have to be a separate event on your calendar. It can be woven into the moments you're already sharing.
At Deep Roots Fitness, we believe that the habits we build together as families are the ones that stick for a lifetime. Here's how to get every generation in your household excited to move and keep it that way.
The most powerful fitness habit isn't a perfectly structured workout — it's simply moving more throughout the day. Look for small windows you already have and add motion to them.
🚶Walk after dinner
Even 10 minutes up the road or around the yard counts. It aids digestion, reduces screen time, and opens up opportunities for real conversation.
🚲Bike or walk to school
When possible, trade the car for some pedal power. It sets an energizing tone for the whole day. The rail trail is a great resource, and pretty accessible from most of the local schools.
🏡Chore circuits
Turn yard work or housework into a friendly competition. Who can rake the most leaves? Who finishes their task first?
We're not going to tell you to ban screens...that's just not realistic for many folks. But you can reframe them. Use your family's love of entertainment as a launching pad for activity.
Try a "commercial break challenge" where everyone does jumping jacks or push-ups during ads.
Play active video games together.
Follow along with a 10-minute family dance video on YouTube.
The key is to lower the barrier to entry! Make it feel like play, not exercise.
When kids see their parents genuinely enjoying movement, they want in. You're not just building fitness. You're building identity.
There's no single "right" way to move as a family. The best activity is the one everyone will actually do. Here are some crowd-pleasers that work for mixed ages and energy levels:
🥾Hiking & trail walks
Nature keeps kids curious. Pick a trail with a fun destination: a waterfall, a summit view, or a hidden swimming hole. There is plenty to choose from around here and if you're not sure, just shoot us a message! We are happy to point you in a good direction.
🏓Backyard games
Cornhole, badminton, kickball, and tag are classics for a reason. They're easy, competitive, and require minimal equipment to get started.
🏊Swimming
One of the best full-body activities for all ages. Whether it's a paddle at Lake Elmore, laps at VSU Johnson, or the splash pad up at Smuggs, water wins every time!
Not everyone in your household is going to jump for joy at the idea of a Saturday morning hike. Here's how to bring the holdouts along without turning it into a battle.
Lead by example, without lecturing. The most effective thing you can do is simply be active yourself! Visibly, joyfully, and consistently. Kids and teens pick up on authentic enthusiasm far more than they respond to being told what to do.
Give them ownership. Let each family member take a turn picking the activity for the week. When people have a say, they show up differently. Even a skeptical teenager is more likely to participate in something they chose.
Start small, and celebrate it. A 10-minute walk is a win. Don't wait until you can do an hour. Start where you are and build momentum. Acknowledging small efforts goes a long way, especially with kids.
Make it social. Invite another friend or family member to join. Friendly company can transform a "chore" into something genuinely fun, and accountability keeps everyone coming back.
Goals give movement purpose. Try setting a shared family challenge: walk 20 miles this month, try 5 new outdoor activities this summer, or do something active together every weekend for 8 weeks. Post it somewhere visible and celebrate each milestone. When fitness becomes a shared adventure, it stops feeling like work.
The roots you plant now (the habits, the memories, the attitude toward movement) will grow with your kids for the rest of their lives. That's what we're about at Deep Roots Fitness. Not perfection. Just consistent, joyful movement, together.
