She Is 73. She Did a Cartwheel. What's Your Excuse?

A 73-year-old did a cartwheel. A 92-year-old pole vaulted at the Vermont Senior Games. And you're telling yourself you're too old to start? Deep Roots Fitness owner, Mel Senesac, has something to say about that.

I was teaching one of my weekly classes at Concept2 (great people over there) and somehow we landed on the topic of cartwheels. Honestly, I don't even remember how we got there. But my friend KC, who is 73 years old, mentioned that she used to be able to do cartwheels.

The room wasn't having it.

"I bet you still can."

KC got a little grin on her face. Hands up. She backed up. She lined up.

She did the cartwheel.

We absolutely lost it. We cheered, we hollered, we told her how amazing she was, and then we all sat with the same quiet hope: I want to still be cartwheeling into my 70s.

The very next day, my friend Cara showed me a video. A woman (92 years old) pole vaulting at the Vermont Senior Games.

I'm sorry. Pole vaulting. At 92.

I know that a 300-pound deadlift isn't everyone's goal. Not everyone wants a sub-5:00 Fran or an unbroken MURPH in a weight vest. That's totally fine. But here's the question I want you to sit with:

What DO you want from your life?

Do you want to hike the trails behind your house without your knees screaming at you? Do you want to keep up with your grandkids? Do you want to travel, to carry your own bags, to get up off the floor without making a sound effect? Do you want to still be cartwheeling at 73?

When one of our alumni members retired, she decided she wanted to walk the Camino de Santiago. And she did it.

Is your current fitness level cutting it? Are the habits you have right now leading you toward that life, or quietly away from it?

Because if the answer is no, you are wasting an extraordinary opportunity. And that genuinely breaks my heart.

Here at Deep Roots, I watch it happen every single week. Folks in their 60s and 70s working to stay active and independent.

Donna G is jumping on 20"+ boxes. Dave L is setting personal records with his lifts constantly. And my own mom...who absolutely cannot be older than 50...(never mind that I'm turning 44 this fall 🤪) hits four classes a week and rides her e-bike to the gym when the weather cooperates.

These people didn't start young. But they DID decide to start. That's the whole thing.

I hear it sometimes, and I understand it, but I'm still going to push back:

"I'm too old.""It's too late.""I wish I had started when I was younger."

We all wish that. Truly. We watch the 20-somethings absolutely crushing it and we feel some kind of way about it. That's human.

But here's what I know: you are not too old, and it is never too late.

The best time to start was 20 years ago. The second best time is right now, today, this week. Every day you wait is just another day you're sitting on the sidelines of your own life and you don't have to do that.

KC didn't wait. She backed up, lined up, and went for it.
